From Cowtown to Cosmopolitan: Why Calgary is Trending to “Modern” Home Design

Recent kudos for Calgary have been many and raving. We were named one of the coolest (The New York Times had us 17th on their 2014 must-see list), the cleanest (Mercer City Financial-#1 in the world), and simply one of the best places to live (Moneysense, #2 in Canada). In less than a decade, we’ve gone from cow-town to cosmopolitan in the eyes of the “who’s who” in the world; a city poised for the future while embracing its past.

Calgary’s adventurous, if not rebellious, spirit has it always looking forward as opposed to the past.

Davignon Martin has particularly noticed the sea of change when it comes to home design. Calgary is a young, cosmopolitan, and confident city. Our adventurous, if not rebellious, spirit has us always looking forward as opposed to the past. This is true for our design tastes, as well, as we are able to embrace modern esthetics just as easily as we embrace new technology. Calgary is also an affluent city. This reality affords many Calgarians the opportunity to demonstrate their modern and contemporary tastes through the esthetic of their home.

We see clients who want sophisticated, contemporary homes that challenge the vernacular.

In both the inner city and newer communities, we see clients who want sophisticated, contemporary homes that challenge the vernacular. Unapologetically modern, these designs are a step beyond the luxury homes and custom in-fills of the nineties. We like to call the trend “New Century Modern” – a new wave of contemporary home design, with roots in the modernist design tradition that’s a favourite of style setters and Generations X and Y. Whether trading up, or building their first dream home, this is a demographic that is plugged in to the most current art and design trends and looking to make their own design statement in a city coming into its own.
